It's fascinating that you should bring this up. I think about this virtually every day.
I grew up in my hometown from roughly 1956 until 1969. I left for college, and pretty much did not return until fairly recently. I lived the last 30 years in Los Angeles. I see many of the people with whom I grew up as kids.
I know that they were brought up to believe that they could be anything that they wanted to be, and I also know that they had very high expectations.
On a daily basis, I ask "what happened?" That need for security never occurred to me. Interesting.
Back in 1977, I saw a piece on 60 Minutes, where someone suggested that all of us can be defined in one of three ways, seeking stimulation, security, or identity.
I have to this day thought about that in terms of my childhood friends, but I did not consider security.
Perhaps because security has never been important to me.

But then again, neither have the other two.
